Tribute to Sr Jill Havey

During this week, we celebrate International Women’s Day and I thought I would take the time to honour a woman who has been a Principal for 50 Years and is now going through a series of farewells from different groups. That woman is Sr Jillian Havey who was Principal of St Dominic’s Priory College. Sr Jill has dedicated her life to the education of girls and young women. She knows the students and families of St Dominic’s very well and everyone I know has a Sr Jill story. I hope that Sr Jill now gets a little bit more time to relax although I know it will be very difficult for her to leave the role of Principal.

Gemma Di Bari wrote in the Sydney Morning Herald on the weekend “Catherine of Siena and Teresa of Avila were women who, despite limitations and challenges, sought to call out injustice. Living in periods of history when women’s opinions were not considered relevant, they made their voices heard through their writing and actions.  Despite personal danger, which came from behaving radically for the time, they pushed on when the pull to be quietly submissive came from those in authority.” You can read the rest of the article here.

We all have women who we admire and are inspired by. My grandmother was widowed at a young age and was left with five children to look after at a time when there was not much social security or support. She had to go out and work. As a young woman, who only had basic schooling she relied on her basic farming skills such as milking cows and a strong work ethic to earn money to keep her family clothed and fed. It was a tough life and she could be a very tough person. However, I admired her tenacious spirit, her can do attitude and her ability to be positive. This International Women’s Day, think of the women you admire and be grateful that you have known them.

Principal’s Tours and Transition Days

This week a large number of prospective families attended our Principal’s Tour on Tuesday. It was delightful to meet so many people and share our plans for the College. Enrolment Interviews are being held over the next few weeks. If you have a daughter in Year 6 and have not yet enrolled at the College, I encourage you to do so at your earliest convenience. Our first Transition Day for the 2021 Year 7 cohort is Wednesday 27 May. Please note, enrolment needs to be finalised to attend Transition Days. Please contact the College Registrar Justine Sheehy via jsheehy@marymackillop.sa.edu.au or 8333 6300 for further information.
