On Monday 25 March, the Year 12 Chemistry class visited the Chemistry laboratories at Flinders University and participated in practical activities that reinforced theory work covered in class related to analytical techniques used to identify and quantify unknown chemicals found in different materials.
We used liquid chromatography to isolate two different food colorings found in Kool-Aid and simulated high pressure chromatography as we isolated a fluorescent chemical used in glow sticks. In the final activity, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) was used to determine the concentration of salt (NaCl) in Adelaide water.
