On Thursday 18 October, four Year 9 and four Year 10 students attended the International Day of the Girl Breakfast held at Adelaide Oval. Over 600 people were in attendance, double the amount of guests from 2017.
During the breakfast, we heard from lots of different speakers about how there are many barriers that exist worldwide in preventing the full participation of girls and women in society. These barriers include, but are not limited to, sexual and reproductive health, poverty at home, education, burdens of domestic work, violence, health and nutrition.
We were inspired by the message that girls and boys need to unite in order to create a just world for all genders and ensuring that girls and women can live in a society where they feel safe, respected and encouraged.
“It was eye-opening to hear how social media and advertising can effect women and girls… The impact can be huge.” – Amelia, Year 10
“Although it was confronting, the International Day of the Girl Breakfast, helped to shed some light on the scenarios that young women find themselves in every day. Even though society has come a long way it still has quite a bit to go in terms of gender equality” - Emily, Year 10
