On Sunday 25 September, twelve talented MacKillop girls walked into the Titanium Arena in awe, trepidation and anticipation. Our very own MMC Dance Performance team competed in their second competition (for some their first) – the South Australian Cheer and Dance State Championships. The Championship involved 204 dance routines, 162 cheer routines and over 1,500 competitors overall. Our girls competed in the Senior Jazz category (ages 14-18) against some incredibly tough and polished competitors. However, with precision, great technique and energy, their excellent performance resulted in a fantastic second place!
The team consisted of students from Years 8, 9 and 10 and had practised on Thursdays for 2 terms. During practice they were required to work on their technical skills, learn the routine, and perfect their movements, technique, spacing and performance. Our entry was choreographed to the iconic song ‘Fame’ by Irene Cara, and the girls wore dashing red sequined costumes with a hint of tulle and chiffon.
The performance was excellent and I hope girls are proud of their growth as dancers and performers.
We thank Mini Del Corso for supporting me on the day and the people involved with our music. Thank you also to the leadership team at Mary MacKillop College for supporting this initiative and to our Deputy Principal, the Year 9/10 Pastoral Care Coordinator and Adriana Sotira for attending the event and cheering on their live competition performance. Furthermore, thank you to all of the parents for your support and commitment.
Lastly, I thank this group of girls for their dedication, motivation and enthusiasm, and I look forward to holding our auditions early next year for the 2017 Dance Performance Team.
