Sports Night 2016

Wednesday 19 October saw the Mary MacKillop College community come together to celebrate all things sport. The gymnasium was transformed from a place of running and jumping into a venue in which the achievements and stories from 2016 could be shared. Under the leadership of the House Captains, this year we welcomed Australian Olympian Jessica Trengove, Old Scholar and current State Basketballer Alex Ciabattoni, and the Time in Space Circus Company to share the evening with us.

Jess Trengove’s warm, friendly and relaxed nature made her an instant crowd favourite. We were fortunate enough to hear how she came to be a marathon runner and the obstacles she has faced due to numerous injuries. Jess also shared her experiences of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the 2012 London Olympics and most recently her time in Rio where she once again represented her country at the Olympic level. Jess left the audience with several key messages including ‘setting big dreams but realist goals’, ‘embracing the challenge but enjoying the journey’ and our favourite: ‘whatever you choose to do, do it with a smile’.

We had the pleasure of welcoming back Alex Ciabattoni to the College. After graduating in 2011 Alex moved to America where she played College basketball. Having since returned to Adelaide Alex is now playing for the Adelaide Lightening. It was wonderful to see her back up on stage sharing her experiences with current Tappeiner House Captain Julia. Alex spoke of the importance hard work and dedication had played in her career and encouraged Mary MacKillop College students to take on as many opportunities as possible while still at school.

In what was a first for the school, Sports Night included a live performance by the Time in Space Circus Company. Having performed at the Adelaide Fringe, in China and soon to be performing at the Adelaide Cabaret, we were certainly in for a very entertaining show. Our very own Margot is part of the group and along with Hamish and Dylan they had the crowd gasping as they flipped, rolled and jumped their way around the floor. Finishing in a 3 person stack the crowd was blown away by just how talented and brave this group was.

The evening also provided the community with a chance to reflect back on the achievements of MacKillop girls throughout the year, Saturday Sport, Knockout Sport, Athletics and Swimming Carnivals and trips to Queensland were shared with parents and friends. We also had the opportunity to present the Commitment, Perseverance and Respect (CPR) awards to those students who had been nominated by their coaches as having best displayed those qualities throughout the year in their sporting endeavours.

The clear theme from the evening and from 2016 has been the passion for which our students have for sport. A passion shared by the wonderful guest presenters who joined us on the evening. A passion that we get to witness and be a part of everyday as students continue being involved and representing their College in all things sport.
