Last week, we celebrated academic excellence and commitment to our school community at the Awards Assembly.  Approximately 50 students were acknowledged at this assembly, each one coming forward to receive their certificate, proud of their efforts and their contribution. Award assemblies and ceremonies take place in all schools and educational institutions.

Principal’s Academic Excellence Awards

At our Awards Assembly in Week 1, academic awards were presented to students who achieved outstanding results in their Term 2 studies. Before these were presented, I discussed with students how important learning is. Learning is a privilege, and it is a delight to work in such a dedicated learning community.

Congratulations to Carla and Jacinta who have both successfully obtained a position as State Representatives at the 2019 Youth Science Forum to be held in January 2019. We look forward to hearing about their experiences upon their return.

Kids today are more obsessed with their body image than those in past generations. This is partially influenced by the media and their social connectivity. Encouraging kids to have a healthy body image in childhood, can lay the foundations for good physical and mental health later in life.

A recent study highlighted that body image is one of the top three concerns for Australian youth. Over half of girls in high schools have tried to lose weight. One-third of teenage boys wanted to be thinner and another third wanted to be larger. Children need to understand that their body shape and size is not a reflection of their health or success. Parents and schools need to work together to help kids understand that everyone is born with their own ‘body-suit’.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn how to encourage their child to have a positive body image and why it is so important to their mental health. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition and we always welcome your feedback.

Mary MacKillop students will once again be waking up early on Saturdays as we welcome back the second half of the Winter Sport season. Sixteen teams across netball, soccer and badminton have represented the College in eight rounds of competition so far. With only four weeks to go until finals we are getting very excited about potential grand final wins. At present, six of the 16 teams representing the College each week are either in first or second place. Most of the remaining 10 teams are not too far off the top spots.
