National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is held every year, from May 27 to June 3. These dates are significant to the Indigenous community; May 27 commemorates the 1967 referendum when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were given the right to vote and counted as part of the census for the first time; and June 3 is known as ‘Mabo Day’, and is the anniversary of Eddie Mabo and the Meriam people’s hard-won 1992 victory in the courts for the first Native Title claim, and the overturning of the ‘terra nullius’ myth.

Opening--Prayer.jpg

Opening Prayer

Let us pray,

Happy are the Poor in Spirit;
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
To be poor in spirit
means to be humble before God.
Humility is realising that all our gifts
and blessings are given to us by God.
There is nothing arrogant
or self-righteous
about someone who is truly humble.
Furthermore,
when we are humble,
we acquire an inner peace
that allows us to do the will of God.
Blessed are the youth
and children in our world who are poor
and less fortunate
but still have hope in themselves.

Amen.
